What & Where We Can Use Rockwool Insulation

The importance of a well-insulated home can’t be overstated: Properly sized and installed insulation help in reducing energy usage, keep building/house warmer in winter and cooler in summer, and save more money with lower energy bills. There are many types of insulation to be chosen for many decades. While fiberglass remains very popular, there’s a relatively new type of insulation that’s making headway in the insulation industry namely as rockwool insulation.

Understanding Rockwool Insulation

Rock wool also known as mineral wool, comes in easy-to-install batts, similar to fiberglass. But instead of being composed of fluffy glass fibers, you might be thinking that rock wool is made of rocks, which doesn’t even seem possible. Let's go through on brief explanation of the rockwool manufacturing process;

Firstly, natural rock is heated until it melts into a liquid in a furnace to about 3,000 degrees. After that, the magma-like liquid will be exposed to a high-pressure jet of air or steam, and then spun at super-high speed into long fiber strands (just imagine on cotton candy machine filled with liquid rock.). Finally, the strands are captured and compressed into thick, dense mats, which are then cut into convenient-sized batts of insulation.

Features of Rockwool

  1. Made from natural & sustainable material

  2. Typically, contains up to 75% recycled content

  3. Good in retaining heat and traps air (slows the heat transfer)

  4. Non-combustible & fire resistant to about 1400 degrees

  5. Highly water repellent

  6. Excellent soundproof properties

  7. Higher insulating value than fiberglass

  8. Long-term performance, because rockwool doesn't degrade over time.

  9. Deters mold and mildew (allows moisture to escape)

  10. No stapling necessary - Dense, Firm batts are friction-fit into place.

Rockwool Insulation Application

Rockwool insulation can be installed to walls, floors, ceilings, attics and crawlspaces. However, it’s particularly well-suited for rooms along the cold north side of the house and for interior rooms in need of sound deadening, such as media rooms or music studios. Since rockwool is highly fire resistant, it’s ideal to be used as a firestop between floors of a house (ask local building inspector for advice).

Rockwool is also easy to work with: The firm batts can be cut with a serrated knife or handsaw to fit snugly into place. If it gets wet, water beads up and rolls off without soaking into the fibers. The rockwool fibers are compacted so tightly together that there’s no chance of the insulation shifting out of position or slumping down, which would dramatically decrease its insulating value.

Conclusion

There is more than one types of insulation material for building construction to be chosen with. However, before any decision, the understanding of insulations benefits, pros and cons and different point of views should be highlighted. The increased insulation capability allows to keep building/home at a comfortable temperature for longer without needing to adjust the thermostat, meaning you’ll make up the initial cost within a couple years. Plus, with rockwool insulation’s long-term durability, your home will be well-insulated with little maintenance needed for years to come.
